Clean and Stain

Well that doesn’t make much sense, right? Except when you’re talking about a fence!

Just over a year ago my mom and stepdad (God bless their souls!) came out for a visit and helped us build a fence in our backyard. Now, a grand total of 14 months later, we have finally decided to stain it in order to protect it…and make it look good. So here it is!

We mixed the cleaning solution with water in a 5 gallon bucket and used an empty RoundUp spray bottle to apply it on the fence.

Then we used the pressure washer to take everything off! It is incredible what a year's worth of weather (especially in Virginia) can do to exposed wood!

After selecting our stain, we decided to purchase a paint sprayer. Wonderful investment for large projects like this. We completed this is under 5 hours. By hand, this could have taken YEARS! haha!

For the first coat, I moved the sprayer vertically.

For the second coat, I sprayed horizontally. This definitely helped even things out.

Here is the finished product! Beautiful, bold red. Now all we need to do is fix up our lawn...

From the front. Now it is protected from the weather and more suited to our taste.

  1. Hi Elizabeth!

I’m the editorial assistant for HouseLogic.com, a site published by the National Association of Realtors covering homeownership-related topics.

Would you consider letting us feature a photo from your fence makeover in our article “6 Maintenance Problems You Didn’t Know You Had” — part of the article talks about when to use a pressure washer. Email me at libby@houselogic.com for the details. Thanks!
